Picea Abies

The Picea Abies is a large tree with a straight trunk and regular branches. The branches grow almost horizontally or bend slightly and have upright tips. The crown shape is narrow pyramidal to columnar. When the Picea Abies is completely free, the branches remain green up to the bottom of the tree. The final width is approximately 8 m. The pollen discolours the red male flowers to yellow, the female flowers are light purple. The hanging cones are 10 – 15 cm long and 3 – 4 cm thick. Ripe cones are loved by squirrels. The tree grows less well in sunny and dry places. Besides important for forestry, Norway spruce is widely grown as a Christmas tree. It tolerates pruning well and can therefore be used as a hedge plant. There are many cultivars where so-called witch brooms have resulted in many dwarf forms.
